Reclaiming land from the sea is plain sailing for the Dutch. Yet, is it possible to create land in the air and by doing so bring the countryside to the city? While being artist in residence in New York Kooijmans toyed with these questions and came up with Floating Gardens: gardens in the shape of clouds, hanging between Manhattan’s skyscrapers.
This project came to a sudden halt after the attack on the Twin Towers. The impact of the catastrophe left no room for light-hearted, optimistic ideas. Eventually, a hanging garden was realised in a large oak tree in Diepenheim in 2014.

Land winnen in de zee: gesneden koek voor een Nederlander. Maar is het mogelijk land te creëren in de lucht? En zo het platteland naar de stad te brengen? Als artist in residence in New York speelde Kooijmans met deze vragen en kwam op het idee van de Floating Gardens: tuinen in de vorm van wolken, hangend tussen de wolkenkrabbers van Manhattan.
Dit project is abrupt gestopt door de aanslag op de Twin Towers. De impact van de ramp was te groot en er was geen ruimte voor luchtige, optimistische ideeën. In 2014 kwam er toch nog een hangende tuin, niet aan een wolkenkrabber, maar in een grote eikenboom in Diepenheim, Nederland.
